Mansfield Mansion is a former Mental Hospital from the early 1860s. Originally called the House of Imbeciles, it was later renamed "The Mansfield Training School". It remained a hospital until 1993 when it was closed down. In 1917, it was merged with Connecticut Colony for Epileptics in Mansfield, where the new 350-acre campus was opened. In the early days of the asylum, the staff would torture the patients with electro therapy and lobotomies, leaving behind written records of how they considered certain disabilities - such as epilepsy and Down's syndrome - to be a very bad thing, and how they tormented the sufferers of these ailments in an attempt to cure them.
